Ayuthaya is on an island at the confluence of the Chao Phraya, the Pa Sak and the Lopburi Rivers. In ancient times water provided both its main defenses and its main transportation arteries. Ships from Europe, Japan and other nations came here to trade with the rulers of this marvelous city. It is difficult now to imagine how beautiful it must have looked 300 years ago when it had about a million people.
